Product Overview

Mathematics has many key topics and areas that students must learn to be successful from one standard to the next and one grade level to the next. In grades 3 - 5, students are still developing their foundation for future learning. This means that mastery of certain areas of math are paramount in helping students bridge the arithmetic to algebra gap, a common concern for students that show basic understanding of arithmetic concepts but have difficulty transferring that learning through secondary mathematics.

Four important math areas in grades 3-5, include but are not limited to developing fluent computation, mastering multi-digit operation approaches, understanding and computing rational numbers, and graphing real world problems on a coordinate plane. This guide provides elementary educators with ways to support students’ efforts in learning these topics using teaching approaches aligned with key secondary topics. By helping students achieve foundational mathematics, teachers increase the probability of students’ success in future learning. Strategies in this guide are designed to support all students, including those with dyscalculia and at-risk concerns.
