Product Overview
Effective use of school data is a hallmark of improving schools. But all the data in the world will have little impact on student achievement unless teachers feel comfortable, knowledgeable, and skilled in regularly using a variety of data to improve teaching and learning. This guide by Nancy Love provides K-12 educators with a simple framework for strengthening data literacy and answering questions such as, how can schools move away from overreliance on state assessments and from using data as a carrot or stick? What other kinds of data should be analyzed, for what purposes, how, and how often? How can data analysis have an immediate and direct impact on instruction, achievement, and equity?
The guide introduces the Data Pyramid, which identifies five data types and the frequencies of use for each type: classroom assessments; assessments within and between units; benchmark assessments; data about people, practices, and perceptions; and annual assessments. It also presents four tools– a criteria analysis table, an error analysis table, an item analysis table, and a quick sort table– to use with different types of data, along with examples and downloadable templates. Finally, it offers a section on responding to data in ways that have a direct and immediate impact on students and their learning.
